Switzerland knows a great variety of climates. From a polar climate in the high mountains above the snow line, to an almost subtropical climate in the southern Alp valleys. The mountain sides are covered with woods, like many riverbanks. The transition from woods to the Alp meadows, is marked by bushy vegetation. Many species of flowers make the Alp meadows a colourful spectacle in the spring and of course there's the edelweiss prized above all other mountain plants.

| People living in Switzerland don't have far to travel to one of the many resorts for traditional winter sports. Although skiing is regarded as the prime winter sport, there is also tobogganing and skating. The epitome of ski-scene elegance, St Moritz is a true winter-sports wonderland. Switzerland's cosmopolitan cities are also well worth a visit. Among the most notable: Basel, Switzerland's only port, has a 15th-century city centre that serves as the backdrop for its daily market. Zurich, at the edge of Lake Zurich and surrounded by forests, is Switzerland's largest metropolis and a haven for shoppers. Sunny communities nestled between Lake Geneva, Montreux and Vevey sport lush vegetation, such as palm trees and magnolias, fig and almond trees. |
